Portal Navigation
The web portal’s navigation is the rail down the left of a desktop screen, the menu that slides in on a phone,
and the tab bar along the bottom of a phone. Staff arrange it for everyone at Admin > Portal > Navigation
(/admin/navigation), which needs the layout.admin permission. Players see what staff arranged. They can’t
rearrange it, but they can open and close pop-out groups in the phone menu.
There is no game command for this: the navigation only exists in the portal.
What you can change
Section titled “What you can change”- Groups. Make a group, name it, and choose how it is shown. Move a group up or down.
- Order. Move anything up or down in its group, or to another group. Drag it, use the arrow buttons, or pick a group from Move to.
- Hidden. Take something off the navigation. It still works for whoever may use it, and the command palette still finds it.
- Links. Add a link to a portal page or another website, such as your game’s Discord. A link can be limited to people with a permission.
- Phone tabs. Choose the three tabs between Home and Menu.
Nothing here changes who can open what. The navigation only shows a page to people who could already open it, wherever you put it. A group with nothing in it for someone isn’t shown to them.
How a group is shown
Section titled “How a group is shown”Each group has a Shown as setting. On a desktop rail:
| Shown as | On the rail | In the phone menu |
|---|---|---|
| Each item on its own | A button for each item, under the group’s name. | The group’s name, then its items. |
| One button, with a sidebar | One button that opens the first item. An application’s page lists the group’s other applications in its sidebar. | The group’s name, then its items. |
| One button that opens a list | One button. Choosing it opens the group’s items beside the rail. | A heading you can open and close. |
Use Each item on its own for the few things players use all the time. Use the other two when a group holds many applications and would make the rail long.
A group shown as a list draws its first four items’ icons on its button, unless you give the group an icon
of its own. Type a Material icon name, such as forum, in Icon.
The list opens when you click its button, not when you point at it. Escape, a click elsewhere, following a link, or scrolling the rail until its button is out of sight closes it. Up and Down move between its links.
In the phone menu, a group shown as a list is open while it holds the page you are on. Otherwise it stays as you last left it in that browser.
When the rail runs out of room
Section titled “When the rail runs out of room”On a short screen, the groups scroll, as a server list does in Discord. The Home button at the top and the buttons at the bottom stay where they are. The top or bottom edge of the groups fades out when there is more that way, and a thin scrollbar appears when you point at them. When a page opens, the rail scrolls to its button.
New applications
Section titled “New applications”When a package adds a portal application, it asks for a group through its Nav placement (Portal Applications). If you have a group with that name, the application joins it. If you don’t, it gets a new group of that name, shown as One button, with a sidebar. The editor marks anything you haven’t placed yet as New.
To decide for yourself where each new application goes, turn off Show newly installed applications straight away. A new application then waits under Hidden until you move it.
Uninstalling an application leaves its place in your layout, marked Not installed. If the application is installed again, it goes back where you had it. Remove the row to forget it.
Add a link
Section titled “Add a link”-
Under the group the link goes in, fill in Link name and Address. The address is a portal page starting with
/, such as/wiki/rules, or a website starting withhttps://. -
Optionally, type a permission, such as
wiki.admin, so only people who hold it see the link. -
Press Add link, then Save.
A link to another website opens in a new tab. Links can’t be hidden: remove one instead.
Choose the phone tabs
Section titled “Choose the phone tabs”A phone shows a tab bar along the bottom: Home, up to three tabs you choose, and Menu, which opens everything. Under Phone tab bar, choose each tab. A tab can be one item, or a whole group. A group’s tab opens its items in a sheet that rises from the bottom of the screen.
A tab someone can’t open isn’t shown to them. Tablets use the phone menu and tab bar too.
Preview, save and start over
Section titled “Preview, save and start over”Preview shows the navigation as a visitor, a player, or staff who can open everything. Press Save to give it to everyone. A portal someone already has open shows it after they reload the page.
If someone else saved while you were editing, your save is refused and nothing of yours is lost from the page. Press Reload to see their version, then make your changes again.
Reset to default removes your groups, order, hidden items and links, and puts back the Play and World groups every game starts with.
